Standard Machining Steps for Automotive Filter Housing Mold Base
  1. Material Cutting
    A sawing machine is used to cut standard steel plates into rough blanks of the required dimensions.

  2. Rough Milling (Face and Side Milling)
    The six faces of the blank (primarily the reference faces) are milled flat on a gantry milling machine, achieving the basic outline and removing most of the machining allowance.

  3. Drilling Lifting Eye Holes/Process Holes
    Screw holes (for lifting eyes), positioning dowel holes, and other reference holes for subsequent handling, transport, and alignment are drilled on a drilling machine.

  4. Rough Cavity Machining (Roughing)
    A roughing machine or gantry mill is used to preliminarily machine the mold cavity, guide pin/bushing holes, return pin holes, and other structural features, leaving a uniform finish allowance for all areas.

  5. Heat Treatment (Quenching and Tempering)
    【Critical Step】 The rough-machined plate undergoes quenching and high-temperature tempering. This relieves internal stresses from rough machining, homogenizes the material, and improves overall mechanical properties (strength, toughness), providing a stable condition for subsequent finishing.

  6. Precision Grinding of Reference Faces
    After heat treatment, slight deformation occurs. This step uses a precision grinder to grind the two primary reference faces (typically A and B faces) to achieve extremely high flatness, surface finish, and exact thickness, establishing the sole, accurate reference for all subsequent precision machining.

  7. Precision Milling
    Using the ground reference faces for positioning, the four sides of the mold cavity, parting surface, shut-off surfaces, slider slots, etc., are finish-machined on a gantry mill or precision milling machine to ensure perpendicularity, parallelism, and dimensional accuracy meet drawing requirements.

  8. CNC Machining
    For complex shapes that cannot be completed by precision milling (e.g., free-form surfaces, deep cavities, 3D runner systems, angled lifter holes), computer programming is used for precision milling on a machining center (CNC).

  9. Drilling and Tapping
    All screw holes, ejector pin holes, water line holes, guide pin holes, etc., are drilled and tapped. This is typically performed on a high-precision radial drill or CNC drilling machine.

  10. Bench Work
    Manual finishing is performed, including chamfering and deburring of all edges, marking part numbers in specified locations, assembling standard components (e.g., guide bushings, dowel pins), and conducting flow tests on water lines.

  11. Final Inspection
    All critical dimensions, hole position accuracy, and flatness are fully inspected using tools such as coordinate measuring machines, height gauges, and calipers to ensure compliance with the design drawings.

  12. Assembly and Packaging
    All components—including front and rear mold plates, guide pins, return pins, ejector plates, etc.—are cleaned, assembled, coated with anti-rust oil, fastened, and packaged for shipment.
